Shane is a masculine given name. It is an Anglicised version of the Irish name Seán, which itself is an Irish derivative of the name John.[1] Shane comes from the way the name Seán is pronounced in the Ulster dialect of the Irish language, as opposed to Shaun or Shawn.
Shane is also a popular surname with the prefix "Mc", "Mac", or "O'", to form Anglicized Irish surname patronyms.[2] The first recorded spelling of the family form of the name is shown to be that of Dermot McShane (ie Son of Shane), which was dated 1659, "Petty's census of Ireland", during the reign of Richard Cromwell, known as " The Lord Protector", 1658 - 1659. [3]
The name Shane became popular through the 1949 novel "Shane" by Jack Schaefer and the 1953 movie adaptation, directed by George Stevens from a screenplay by A.B. Guthrie Jr..
Shane is sometimes used as a feminine given name. However, the feminine version of the name is not derived from the Northern Irish name Shane, but rather from the Yiddish name Shayna, meaning "beautiful".

Variant forms include Shayne and Shain.
